105: Gouache Sketch: Deccan College, Pune, Main Tower

It is certainly so much a pleasure to dabble in a different medium each time you are sketching or painting instead of sticking to a particular medium & even a particular style of painting or sketching. The monotony doesnt exist & the challenge is manifold! At least thats my personal outlook!

So it had to be the Gouache medium this time after a long time. Although water-based, it is opaque, unlike the transparent watercolours. Although the translucent transparency of watercolours is not to be seen in Gouache, its opacity gives it more chance for experimentation & manipulation. And that is fun.

From the campus of Fergusson College, Pune, with its great colonial monuments of Architecture ...

Sometimes it is hard not to render the sketches with colour although the black & white version looks good too.. My friends & colleagues prevail upon me to let my black & white sketches be... but the colourist in me takes over nonetheless... & so as per their advice, have started taking photocopies of the b/w sketch in its initial line-work form itself so as to have fun with colour on it giving me the best of both worlds & yet keep it plein air... at least in its initial part. So that it now transpires into a study in comparison... of B/W & Colour... & therefore posting the B/W version yet again... just below this image... all done with the Urban Sketchers Pune.

I enjoy dabbling in all possible mediums of sketching & painting... gouache being one of them... after working in the magic of the translucent watercolours, working in gouache gives you relief... its thick impasto layering can be undaunting as it gives ample scope for rework... gouache works especially well on tinted papers... switching mediums takes away the monotony too!
